On Thursday, June 8, 2017, 10 students graduated from Girard College. Referred to as the "Tenacious 10," these students weathered some ups and downs during their high school years while decisions were made about the future of Girard College.
In the historic Girard Chapel, in front of family, friends and staff, the class of 2017 reached their long-held goal of graduating from the school they love.
Student speakers wowed the audience.
Student Body President Siddiq R., was the first speaker. Among his rhyming remarks:
"I'm still young and don’t know it all
but I know right from wrong and want to teach you all
to never fold and I stand tall.
I speak the truth, and I’m not trying to be Moses
but cherish every second and 'smell the roses.'"
Valedictorian Rashae B. said:
"Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations."
Salutatorian Stanton H.:
"Stephen Girard ... His legacy has been the platform for hundreds of Girardians in the past, and today his legacy continues as the smallest class in Girard College history goes on and makes him proud. I want to send a huge Thank You to him for allowing us to have access to better life and a brighter future."
And finally, Satara P. reminded her classmates:
"We may be the smallest class but we are the mightiest. After a long 3,283,200 minutes spent doing homework, writing papers, presentations, reading books and plays about freedom and happily-ever-after’s, it’s now time to write our own. So go out into the world and leave your mark. In the words of Eric Thomas 'Be Phenomenal or Be Forgotten.'"
