President Armbrister to Johnson C. Smith University
Note to the Girard College Community, 10/7/2017
I am writing to let you know that I have accepted the position of President of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. Therefore, I have tendered my resignation to the Board of Directors of City Trusts as President of Girard College, effective December 1, 2017. Ms. Ava Willis-Barksdale will serve as interim-President until a permanent successor is named.
While I am enthusiastic about this new opportunity, it is also bittersweet in that I have enjoyed immensely the privilege to have served as the President of Girard College. I will always treasure the five and one-half years I have worked beside each of you as we have strived to stabilize the long-term future of Girard.
In our time together we have accomplished so much, but we all are cognizant of the fact that there is much more work to be done. In that vein, I have great confidence in the team that has been assembled, as well as the ongoing commitment of the Board of Directors of City Trusts and all of you – the faculty, staff, students and alumni – to continue the important work that we have undertaken together.
I want to thank the Board of Directors of City Trusts, especially President Ronald Donatucci and Vice President Bernard W. Smalley, Chair of the Girard College Committee, for the support that they have provided to me and to Girard College during my tenure. I would also like to thank each and every member of the Faculty, Staff, Administration and Alumni for the outstanding support you offered during our time together, and for the incredible efforts you make each and everyday in supporting our students.
Finally, to the students, I want to thank you for the energy, creativity and hard work that you bring to your student careers at Girard. I encourage you to remember that, far beyond my tenure or that of any adult here, what matters most is your next step; that is, continuing to reach beyond what you may even think is possible, because as I said to you in my first Chapel talk in September of 2012:
“Success is not the result of a spontaneous combustion, you must set yourself on fire!
